The deep cool waters of Georgian Bay; the adjacent fertile soils; the protective boundaries formed by the Niagara Escarpment; and the Northern Latitude; combine to influence the creation of three pockets of microclimate that make our area suitable for growing Apples. The annual yield of around 3,000,000 bushels is comprised of half McIntosh, one third Northern Spy, and Red Delicious, Idared, Empire, Spartan, Cortland, Jerseymac, Golden Delicious, and Crispin / Mutsu - in descending order of volume. Other minor varieties include Paulared and Vista Bella. The Southern Georgian Bay Apple Growing District produces a ‘premium quality’ McIntosh. Our ‘premium quality’ Mac is a delight to savour as a crisp fat-free nutritious snack, the key ingredient of a delightful salad, or as an exquisite sauce; and don’t forget to occasionally reward yourself with a mouth-watering pie, a scrumptious taste that should be one of life’s pleasurable experiences. Welcome to Binkley Apples Limited, located in the ‘heart’ of the Southern Georgian Bay
Apple Growing District. At 44 30’ North Latitude, we are the most northerly apple-producing
area in Ontario. The potential of our area for growing apples has been recognized since the
early 19th century. There are approximately 8000 acres of apple orchard in this district, with
over 160 different commercial apple-growing operations. These orchards produce
approximately one quarter of the total annual Ontario apple crop.
