The Russet, also known as the Egremont Russet, is one of Ontario's oldest varieties. Still one of the more popular choices of apples in Europe, the Russet is medium sized with an almost perfectly round shape save for a slightly flat top and bottom. The skin is pale to medium green with a fine netting of tan 'russeting', slightly rough to the touch, which can cover between 40% and 90% of the surface.
The Russet apple's flesh is thick, tangy and sweet, making it an ideal candidate for pie filling, applesauce, and great as a fresh snack.
